Hi there, my husband and I are looking to relocate to Menorca ( Cala en Porter ) in the very near future so would be very grateful for any tips and advice. Things like utility bills and property tax ( council tax ) costs would be very helpful as would any other advice. We are looking to buy a property without a mortgage and will be viewing when we come out in June and again in September. We look forward to any tips and help on anything about relocating.

Hi Lynette,

First of all congratulations for making the brave choice to move to this beautiful island! If you are British, I’d suggest you look into moving to Calan Porter as there is a strong community of English expats living there all year long! Transportations will also be quite efficient during the winter time if you look into traveling to commute to Mahon during the cold months.

Moreover, property prices are quite competitive in Calan Porter and reasonably priced, example a 60 meter square apartment/ bungalow could cost you as little as 85K. Cash buyers are very welcome indeed! The praxis of the pro and post buying processes  are quite similar to the one in UK: you negotiate the price with the vendor and once accepted you pay a 10% deposit and pay the outstanding balance within a month. After that you go and sign the whole thing at the notary. Few days later you will be receiving a document (generally by email ) comprising of all the taxes that you will have to pay (generally a 9.5% to 10%) of the value of the property. And then you’e done, you will happily live in a paradise island for the rest of your life.

I hope the tips above helps , anything else, pls do not hesitate to write back. The first year might feel a bit isolated, but after a bit you get going meeting the residents in here. In my case I have a strong community of Italian and few British I know (not many Spanish) so I’ll be delighted to introduce them to you.

Although I am not British by birth , I commute regularly between UK and Spain for work/business  and I have been established here in Menorca for the last 2 years . A positive life changing experience. I really hope you will be following your dream through!

All the best!

Hi don’t know if you’ve looked at property in CP but there is an English estate agent here called Danny Whybrow (Whybrows Menorca). I’d get in touch with him and ask him about property, bills etc. He’s well established and will give you sound advice.
