Hi, all. Myself my wife and 17 year old daughter want to relocate to Spain. We were thinking mainland initially but love the look of Menorca, but never been there. I understand the issues around residency, is it any easier or harder in Menorca. Also what prospects are there for a 17 year old. If possible we want to buy something out there for around 100k that we can live in and gain residency. What areas would you suggest as we want to eventually rent it out and buy a other home.

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike, Good morning, welcome to the forum! Menorca is a wonderful island and is quite different to the mainland. It is also very different in summer and winter. A normal summer, obviously not this year, is busy. The season is pretty short though. Who knows what next year will bring! As regard to areas, there are definitely resort areas good for letting out with a license, but which are very quiet in the winter, some with very few facilities. Most people who are residents here will live in one of the towns or the countryside. 100k pounds or euros won't by a lot, but I'm sure you are keeping your eye on the property websites. Do get in touch again if you need more help in that direction! With regard to your daughter. Does she speak Spanish or Catalan. It would help if she would be prepared to learn a bit. There isn't much employment here. In fact there is a high level of unemployment sadly. Having said that, if she was happy to do studying online or only to work the summer months or even to set up an online business of some sort she could survive!

Best wishes in your planning, so much to consider. We did all that 6 years ago now and really haven't regretted it at all!

Hi, I'm very sorry for the late reply.

Thankyou so much for reading and replying to my message.

We still want to buy a property before the end of the year but flights are difficult and we are worried about getting stuck out there as covid seems to be getting worse. Looks like we will have to wait till next year, just a shame though because getting residency then will be so difficult. I would value your opinion please.

Regards Mike

Hi Mike,

No worries! Life is busy and complicated, we understand. Yes Easyjet are rapping up their flights from London at the end of this week. Sadly they are not covering the island for the winter, starting again in April. Yes there will be tougher rules next year for residency but having said that the rules are changing all the time! I suppose it all depends on going out with a deal or not! I think the biggest change for residency next year will include having to have more money in the bank and health care. Who knows though! The upside about waiting though is that there seems to be a great choice in property and I bet there will be a few bargains around so it might pay financially to wait! I think whatever you decide to do you will make it work! Sounds like you will be careful and positive in your venture!

Best wishes, Shona

Thanks Shona, been trying to sell our house but it's horsey with fields etc so a limited market. We might have enough savings to buy a run down apartment so we could at least go for the residency but if I'm honest that's not really what we want. We have a 17 year old that finishes college June next year, a house to sell, covid still going on. Seems like fate is steering us. But we shall get to Menorca.
