Hello, lovely to meet you all and know that there is a forum to help us. We are looking to retire to Menorca in approx 4 years from the UK.  Just a quick question to ask if its a good idea to start researching where we want to live and also start getting the necesary steps in place.  We have asked for an appointment with the consulate in the Uk for us to get an NIE number to be able to start getting things in order.  We really cannot wait to have some quality life in Menorca so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated and pointers on the steps to take for buying a villa, estate agents names etc would be good to know and anything you would think be useful to know.  Many thanks -G&G-

Hello G&G,

My first port of call would be Age In Spain, don't be put off by the name.

They will give you free impartial advice on what you will need and the process involved, if you are UK citizens then you will need a visa, and as you are retiring the Non Lucrative Visa I would have thought would be your choice.

It may be a little early to be getting your NIE

You would definitely want to visit Menorca and get around the island as much as possible, join Facebook groups as this can be a real source of proper local info, ask for recommendations for estate agents who will be able to advise you through the purchasing process, meet them for viewings while you are there, Island & Home are very professional as are Bonnin Sanso, you can view most of what is available on Right Move Menorca

Many of the costal towns 'shut down' for the winter, visiting in the winter months would also be advisable because they can be a bit harsh, more so than many would believe.

There are some expat communities, I know of a large number of expats in Cala en Porter for example, the cricket club is also another old English tradition where there is a club etc.

I wish you luck in your adventure.

Andy

Hi AndyK,

Sorry for the delay in replying, we have been on holiday.

Thank you so much for the great advice and information and we won't be put off by the name 'Age in Spain' , we had a look at the site and it is very useful. We are looking to come over in September to start our research and adventure in readiness for our retirement move, we just wish it was now but are also glad we have the time now to explore the island and realise which area we would like to settle.  Thank you again and looking forward to future correspondence. G&G

Bonninsanso is one of the best Estate agents on the island. It's important to get a good lawyer. I have used Fernando Visser in Calle Norte in Mahon for many years. Banca March is one of the better banks. Good luck!
