We bought a flat here in Ciutadella in Nov 2018, since then weve come as much as we can to stay here, here for up to a few months a year, but our main residence is in UK and we work in UK too.

we've been advised by a friend who's a solicitor in Madrid that to ensure we have the same or similar rights that we have now, after end of December, its better we apply for this residents card asap

its not that we wont be able to get it after December, but it might well be more difficult and more expensive

we're looking into how best to do this, and understand we need proof of income and a private medical insurance as we are in our early 60', and its been suggested to us that a Gestororia (administration office) may be able to help us with this.

If anyone out there is trying to apply for this too, or has any useful information, would appreciate hearing from you

thanks

Anita

Hi Anita, we applied for our Residecia this January. We had to sign on the Padron at the town hall where our home is. They will give you a piece of paper which you will need. We had to take out medical insurance for the year which included hospitalisation. They didn't let us pay monthly as some people just cancelled their direct debits after the first month! We took ours with Axa. It was easy but quite expensive. We also had to have proof of money in our bank account on the day that we were applying. We took all this info to the police station. The police won't speak English with you, so take someone with you if you need help with the language. Hope this helps. I think after December it will be more difficult! best wishes, Shona

Hi Shona,

thanks very much for your reply, its very helpful, we have been finding it difficult, different advice from different people, eg the police station in Ciutadella referred us to one office, who referred us to a website to make an appointment in mahon, which we got nowhere with, and so on and so forth! Anyway, would be really helpful to know a few more things:

how long did it all take, ie from when you got the form from your local town hall to going to police station with all your documents....?

Regarding proof of finances, what does that entail, just proof of money in your bank account the day you go to police station, in which case what's the min amount you need? or do they want proof of monthly income? And is it OK to show joint account as we are a couple (civil partnership) or do they want to see separate accounts?

Thanks for your support and time

All best

Anita

Hope this may be helpful to you except as you’re not pensioners, the S1 doesn’t apply, you would need to get private medical insurance. Residencia only applies if you are going to spend more than 183 days in Spain and then you would be liable to pay tax here and declare all worldly assets. The information below is what was required last year!

Requirements for Residencia

1. Ring Overseas Health Department 00441912181999 for S1 Form

2. Open Bank Account with €10,152.80 for a married couple or €5,488.00 for a single person. Ask bank to print out a certificate stating amount in account as proof to take to police station.

3. Go to Town Hall. Ask to be put on the ‘padron’ (electoral roll). Take rental contract/escruitura,  passports & NIE certificates.

4. Passports + photocopies

5. Complete EX18 Form

6. Complete TASA (Form 790-012) & take to bank & pay 12.80

7. NIE Certificates

Take all this to Office de Extranjeros, (police station in Plaza Miranda behind indoor market) up the steps, take a ticket from box on desk like in a supermarket & sit down until number comes up. (Usually ten minutes at most). They don’t speak English!!

Forms EX18 and 790-012 can be downloaded online.

Hi Anita, yes, I can understand your confusion and difficulties with the situation. We had sleepless nights about it all too. We found that people had conflicting ideas. Mainly because rules seem to change and also even the police deal with things differently. The Covid situation has blurred clarity too! Don't fret at the end of the day if you want to get  residencia it is very easy now. Basically once you have signed on at the town hall your Padron is valid for 3 months so you can take your time doing the rest if you wish. Now you will need to make an appointment with the town hall, we just turned up but things have changed. You should take the deeds of your property and passport and NIE. We have a joint bank account too. When we got to the police station they dealt with us as separate people not a couple and wanted 2 copies of what was in the joint bank account as they collate proof separately for each person so just ask the bank for 2 stamped copies of what you have in the bank. It was about 6000 euros each no other proofs needed then. If you really don't want to do all this yourselves you can pay someone to do it for you for about 60 euros each.

Best wishes again! Do seriously think though whether this is what you really want to do! We felt pushed by Brexit too!

You don't have any rights whether you have a residencia or not so just enjoy coming on holiday spending time in your place and going out.  If anything they will expect you to pay tax if you let them know what's in your account !!!

Hi, you cannot apply for residencia here in Menorca if your main resident is in the UK. You need to make an appointment with a solicitor asap  and sort out where you wish your permanent residence to be. I believe you have to make an appointment on line for the police station, but I’m sure a good solicitor will do that for you if you choose to become a permanent resident in Menorca.

If you was changing your passport to Spanish then it would be different but to have a residencia only means getting a cheaper flight ticket only to Spain .  I had a business here for 13 years . I was entitled to nothing . No unemployment or help to support my child. Not even medical. All that I paid in to help spainand I got nothing.  Keep your money and dont give it away .  They will sell you a house that is illegal and tell you it's your fault

Thanks again Shona for further helpful thoughts, and advice, always helpful when coming from someones own actual experience!  its good to know that we can use our joint account if we do decide to go forward, but that we need our own copy for our individual application

i think what we'll do at this stage is to get an appointment at local town hall to ask for our 'Padron', then as you say there is time to think about it all more as its valid for 3 months, that seems like sound advice!

its easy to over react at the moment with 'Brexit' looming and all that goes with that.

Out of interest, how much time do you tend to spend a year here on average?

all best

Hello Tamara,  thanks for responding with your thoughts, are you permanent residents here, or do you just come here regularly for periods of time?

best
