Hello, I have just stumbled across this amazing page!

I am looking for some advice From family’s who have made the move to Menorca. Anything  would be really helpful.

My family and I have been visiting the beautiful island of Menorca for over 14 years mainly to Cala Galdana. and are now seriously considering a move.

Only problem is that we are a little unsure as to make a permanent move, sell up in the uk and take the leap of faith!!

This would mean buying a property and trying to work. Ideally we were thinking of either buying a property to live in and another to rent or buying a property in two and renting half during the summer. But after researching I know rules in Menorca can make this tricky! It would be really Interested to hear from anyone who has successfully done this. Or another option is to buy move and work in our professions. I have worked in childcare for 18 years both as an early years teacher/ childminder and a forest school teacher. My husband owns a domestic/commercial oven cleaning company. But neither of us would be opposed to other work. My husband original profession is as a furniture maker but can put his hand to anything from painting decorating to gardening.
we also have two children ( four in total but two are now adults and have their own loves) our two youngest daughters are 11and seven so any information on schooling would also be much appreciated. Also the best areas for a British family to move to. Thank you so much I’m advance for any information anyone can offer. Katrina

Hi I’ve just read your post!! If your husband could open an oven cleaning business here he’d do really well!  As far as I’m aware there isn’t one on the island and with all these rental properties he could be onto a winner! But....then again probably only at the beginning of the season when the management company go in to clean Apartment or villa. It’s very hard to find work here for a family. It’s not a holiday. We came to live 12 years ago.(Both took early retirement). We had 2 apartments 1 of which we bought 20+ years ago we rented out both and then bought our villa which we let out before moving over. Now I have 1 apartment for sale, but both long term lets. We live in the villa. Problem is like this year you wouldn’t make much money (coronavirus). The season if it gets started will be very short. I gave up renting about 5 years ago as although you don’t make as much money you do get a steady income and your renters pay electric and water!! If the Apts are on a complex you have to pay maintenance fees about 600€ pa. Holiday resorts close down in winter months, no buses, doctors, shops etc. If you’re serious I’d rent before buying to make sure it’s the right area. Painter/decorators/gardeners are two a penny here, mostly English who have been here a long time. As for teaching you wouldn’t get any work (there are lots and lots of spanish waiting to teach).  It’s mainly cleaning for someone during the season. Sorry. Lots of villas for sale in Cala en Porter. Have you tried Whybrows Menorca it Casas enMenorca? There are schools in all the “big” towns taught in Catalan and spanish. The little ones get by pretty well. When I came over to live lots of “locals” moved out of their villas and rented them out for the summer but unfortunately now there is a shortage of rental properties around. Don’t forget the kids get 3 months holiday in the summer!! It’s a good life but always remember you’re not on holiday. Not cheap here either!! Best of luck with your choice. Try posting on expats Menorca (Facebook) more response.

Thank you so much for your reply! we are obviously in research mode atm. I have lived an worked abroad before. ( I lived in Greece for six years and ran a cafe/bar) but this was pre children and that of course makes everything more difficult. Another option we are thinking of is to keep our uk property for the time being and buy a smaller property in Menorca so we can see how it goes. I did think there would be lots of handy men around on the island! So will rule out that option.

Hi, we are a family from cheshire also in the process of putting things in place to make the move to Menorca. We have a 7 and 4 year old and have been in regular contact with the head teacher of la Salle school in Alaior. It seems like a really good school and classes go from 3years - 16 year. (There is also a La Salle school in mahon) The head teacher at this school was very helpful in answering alot of our questions regarding schooling in menorca. So, once you decide on your area might be worth giving the school in that area a call.

Hope all goes well with your move 😊
