Beautiful place to retire to …..choose carefully where you want to be and what to buy ...my husband and I lived there in a villa he built for his retirement following the death of his late wife.  Those were the best years ever …..lots of friends, social life, lots of places to eat .quiet beaches as well as crowded tourist ones !  but I expect if you are planning retirement you know all that anyway !......we moved (sadly ...I didn't want to !) to France as my husband (15 years older than me)  found Menorca to be too hot for him as he got older.  France gave us a good life, but I would have loved to move back to Menorca.  Last year he died, and I was looking to move back ….but then BREXIT happened ...worst thing ever !  so now I have reluctantly returned to the UK ...with the intention of buying a holiday flat back in somewhere like Alayor, anywhere in the Mercadal region where there is life and a bus service if you no longer drive.  The coast is wonderful (we lived in Addaia)  a harbour town 2 km from Arenal ,....at that time we had plenty ofexpect if you are planning retirement you know all that anyway !    friends etc but over the years a lot of them moved back to the UK for various reasons (family, children's education, no work, etc) and quite a few sadly died...…..I still look at Bonin Sanso and other agents waiting for the outcome of Brexit so see what will happen.  You probably know you will need a NIF NUMBER  and of course you will have to keep au fait with the latest residency requirements which willnge when Brexit happens ...and also  private medical insurance IF the UK reciprocal agreement no longer applies,  YOu can do a lot of research online whilst  Menorca is still in semi lockdown (apparently they are only allowing Spanish tourists for the foreseeable future)...BUT  be careful to 'age proof' what and where you buy as if one of you or both are no longer fit to drive, life could be difficult in a rural area....i.e. our nearest shop after the tourist season ended and the local shop and bar closed, was 12km to Alayor or Mahon ….fine when you drive, difficult if you no longer can,  Also, medical facilities.  We had a great doctor in Mercadal ...but there again, it was quite a drive away (luckily I think I only went once !)  You can read online Es (or El, can't remember) Diario, the local paper ...there used to be an English magazine La Roqueta ...not sure if that is still about.  You can, or could, look at a site called Living in Menorca which has a forum for Q & A;s...…..I usually go back two or three times a year but sadly can't go for the foreseeable future !  Good luck

Many thanks for the extremely useful advice/information, so very sad to hear you have lost your husband. Menorca is truly a beautiful island.  Thank you again, keep safe
