My wife and I in time were thinking of retiring to Menorca. Reading the posts on this group (which I have literally just joined) in relation to squatters and the Spanish laws surrounding the issue, it has immediately put us off from living there already!

Menorca is a beautiful stunning place to be and yes we have a few years to go before our retirement but if the laws don’t change, and hopefully they will by the time we decide to move out there, then sadly we’ll have to reconsider our move to somewhere else in the sun....

...

That would be a great shame because we love Menorca and it’s way of life but we would want to feel safe and secure in our OWN home and not have the fear that it’s going to be taken over by squatters when we’re not there with no help or support from the law and the powers that be.

Is this what seems be a growing huge problem being looked into legally and is there any progress so far if any?

Hi . There does'nt seem to be a change in the law any time soon.. The problem is growing day by day. Only yesterday friends of mine called the police because a car with 4 suspicious guys was seen cruising slowly in Trebaluger. They appeared to be sussing out which houses are unoccupied. The police said unless they were actually seen to be physically breaking in they couldn't do anything.. It's not really the fault of the police because they are restrained by the law.

Similar things have been seen to be happening in Cala en Porter Son Bou and Son Parc. I have lived in Menorca since 1978 and have never heard of squatters in Menorca til the last couple of years.. It's a real shame..

Be nice to get a few friends over for a week and take the squatters sorry( occupants )out for a friendly beer!!  I am not saying that the rightful owners should then let their friends (with keys)or even them selves move in and act as though there are No squatters . If however you notice broken or changed locks then this is vandalism( a totally different scenario) Get yourselves or friends in immediately to secure your property with your permission!!!  You could possibly find  that cameras/ binoculars/ paintings/ iPads etc etc are MISSING !!!   You know what I mean !!!   Call me if need home advice.   Stuart
