Travel to Balearics - 2 replies

Posted by Ianrhammy in Coronavirus discussion in Addaia: Covid-19 news and updates on Sun Mar 15, 2020 2:09pm

Today Sunday the FCO are advising against all but essential travel to Spain, balearics and Canaries. Whilst this may be the right advice I can't imagine the economic chaos this will wreak on Menorca. I have had a home in Addaia for 34 years. Many of the local business owners are friends. Let's hope this restriction will be lifted as soon as is safe. Ian Hamilton

Spain declares a national lockdown - 0 replies

Posted by Alex in Announcements on Sat Mar 14, 2020 10:37pm

Spain has declared a national lockdown.

You can read the full declaration here (in Spanish):

And also:

Here are the details from the Guardian in English:

"The Spanish government has formally declared a state of emergency over the coronavirus, placing the country in lockdown and ordering people to stay at home for the next two weeks unless they have to buy food or medicine or go to work or hospital.

The prime minister confirmed that people would be required to stay home from Monday morning and that all non-essential shops would close, along with bars, restaurants, cafes and cinemas.

Supermarkets, small food shops, pharmacies, petrols stations and pet supply shops are among those businesses that will remain open.

He said: “During the state of emergency, people will only be allowed out on to public streets for the following reasons: to buy food, basic or pharmaceutical items; to attend medical centres; to go to and from work; to look after children, older people or those with disabilities or who are especially vulnerable, and to attend financial or insurance offices on force majeure grounds.”

Speaking after a seven-hour cabinet meeting on Saturday evening, the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said “extraordinary decisions” needed to be taken as Spain grappled with a “health, social and economic crisis”.

Sánchez said the central government would direct the response and that all the local, national and regional police forces would come under the command of the interior ministry. He also said that the army was standing by and ready to help with the emergency response.

Sánchez acknowledged that the measures needed to tackle the coronavirus would have a “big economic impact” but said the government was committed to mitigating its effects."

Living and working in menorca - 0 replies

Molly95 Posted by Molly95 in General Mahón discussion on Wed Mar 4, 2020 11:49am

Hi I’m looking for some advice and I’m hoping people can help me . My name is molly and I’ve been coming to menorca since I was a child . I work for TUI as a kids rep in the summer and this will be my second season in menorca . I met my partner while I was on season last year and he is a local born and bred in menorca .  My partner is currently looking for property he can rent for us or if it’s a good idea if we flat share . But in the long run I’m hoping that I can live in menorca with him after my season finishes in October, and also try to find some work for the winter .

I’d appreciate any advice or places I can look

Thanks again , Molly 😃

Car dealers in Mahon, Menorca: new and used car dealers - 0 replies

Martin R Posted by Martin R in Recommended Tradesmen and Companies in Mahón on Mon Mar 2, 2020 12:53pm

Where can I find a list of second hand car dealers in Mahon, or wider afield on Menorca, just want a 5k euros run-a-round for when I'm on

Menorca, rather than keep renting every time we go to our Villa. I know people say buy on the mainland and bring it across but that has its

worries as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Martin

Sad news - 8 replies

We are sorry to say that Jan, my mother and founder of this website, recently passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jan enjoyed working on this website and helping others, and you may be interested to know the following background about her and our website:

In 2004 Jan started a web-based group for expats in the Cuidad Quesada area in Spain for a small group of friends and residents, where they could discuss living in the new development within the area and share ideas. At the time, there was limited information and help online for people in their position, and excited by the thought of reaching more people in similar situations, Jan started the website in 2011 with the aim of creating a friendly and informative place for people to visit for everything to do with Quesada. This friendly online community has since grown considerably, as today it stands at nearly 12,000 members.

Based on the success of Jan’s Quesada website, she then started more websites covering other areas in Spain, as well as a website for the UK. After all of Jan’s hard work, she has gained nearly 100,000 members in total across all the websites.

Jan loved nothing more than helping people find useful information that she wished she could have found herself when she first thought about living in Spain and buying a property there.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and thanks to Jan for any help she may have given you over the years, either personally or through the help her websites have provided. Or if you’re new to the site hopefully you will find Jan’s experience and legacy helpful to you.  We will continue Jan’s work keeping the website up to date, encouraging discussions and exchanging useful information.

We have also set up a Just Giving page in memory of Jan, to help raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice, in the UK, which cared for her so kindly during her final days. Princess Alice Hospice rely on donations and fundraising to keep going, and provide a wonderful service for those who need it. Here is the link if you wish to kindly donate:

I will be carrying on Jan's websites in her memory as this is what she would have wanted. For the moment please bear with me while we get up to speed on everything.

Thank you,

Broadband and TV in Menorca - 1 replies

JohnSully2311 Posted by JohnSully2311 in Broadband Internet, Wifi, Phone and TV in Binibeca on Tue Feb 11, 2020 5:15am

We are looking at buying an apartment in Cala Torret (Binibeca) and was wondering which is the best broadband and tv package. Ideally we will be using the apartment most of the year, and would require a good broadband connection,  also any tips on receiving UK TV would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
