We've just bought a small 2 bed flat here in ciutadella and to begin with we plan to be here on and off as much as we can, but realistically it's likely to be 4 - 6 months only in the first year or so...we are wondering if it's possible to find a company that takes into account and provides for people like us who need WiFi when they are here but who don't want to pay high prices all to year round if they are not here for periods of time, eg WiFi that can be discontinued when you are not here and then reconnected when you are here?

Hi,

We have an apartment in Binibeca, which we use for 4 - 6months each year.  We use wimax from Infotelecom. You pay an amount each month for the service but can turn it off when you are away and only pay 5 euro a month  to maintain the service. They have offices in Mahon and  Cuitadella.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your reply, yes we went to infotelecom and talked to someone there about having WiFi via an antenna rather than the more expensive cable broadband.  She said the only downside is that you can only use it for a bit of surfing Internet and emails and listen to radio but not for anything involving images, like watching tv as signal too weak.  How do you find it, is that your experience?

Hi,

We have the 16MB package we use it for radio, surfing, email and movie downloads. We did try to use it for tv and it worked well. However we share a large satellite dish with our neighbours and use that for tv.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Just to update this post, we're here for a month this time, and we are trying vodophones mobile wifi router package, supposedly on a monthly rolling contract (thats how it was sold to us in shop in UK), it works very well, surfing internet, music and movies, catch up tv etc,and at £22.50 a month not bad, however when we called customer services to cancel 30 days in advance as shop staff instructed us to do, they didnt seem to be on the same page as shop staff, and it was not straightforward, so we'll have to wait and see when we get back if contract was cancelled or not, and talk to vodaphone again then.   Whilst we are here we will investigate vodaphone shop here to see what they offer...I'll keep you posted

Hi Claire, im doing something different this year, and its working out much better than vodaphone. I have a Huwai portable router, that i bought on amazon espana, and then i bought a lycamobile sim card for 20 euros, in tbe Locutorio shop here in Ciutadella, which you put into the router, and it buys you a month of wifi

Its like the vodaphone deal but better, as its cheaper and you are not tied in to any company or contract, you just buy another pay as you go sim card if you need to...

Just be clear when you buy it  with the woman in locutorio that tbe sim is for wifi so you can use your laptop and other devices in your home...ive only used it for browsing online, zooms etc.,  im told it doesnt last long if you  use it to syresm or duwnload films, but ive not tried that so im not sure.... But The vodaphone router abd sim ran out very quickly when my nephew was here and he watched a few films on netflix, so i imagine its the sane with this one too

Regards

Anita

Hi Anita

Thanks for the tip. We are over there for a month in October and both my sister and I will have to work - so lots of Zoom and Team calls. And emails etc. Do you think it should work for that?

When you say ran out - is there a certain amount of data you purchase I assume?Could you top up?

Thanks so much for responding. So difficult to know and work out what is best!

Thanks Claire
