my partner and I own our flat here, currently no residency,  but plan on applying this year,  we want to buy a second hand car now and wondering how it works, i.e to get car insured here since Brexit before we get residency as that process will take us a few months probably

I have international driving license and an insurance from UK to cover excess for car hire, to avoid exorbitant fee's for that, not sure if i can get a car fully insured here from UK if necessary?

Hi Anita, if you have an NIE number and address iit is starightforward to own a car. You can get insurance easily enough through companies like AXA (next to the market square in Mahon). We have a Dacia Sandero and a Suzuki Ignis for sale (we are leaving the island). Details of the Dacia can be found on this forum. The Ignis is 19 years old but has a new ITV and still runs well. We would sell it for a 1000 euros.

Let me know if you want any further information.

Steve

Hi Steve

thanks for your reply, to answer my question, thats very helpful, and means we can definately go ahead with buying a car.

We have a friend who is helping us to look for a car, so i'll talk to him about the Suzuki Ignis,

can you tell me the mileage and anything that needed doing in most recent ITV?

many thanks

Anita

Weve spoken to our friend, he asked if you would be willing to drive car (suzuki) over to his garage so they could look it over for us.

We are considering one other car, friend of a friends, similar price,  10 yrs old, but its in Barcelona, so owner would need to bring here...

Hi Anita

The Suzuki has done 188,000 km. Passed ITV first time - no advisorries..

Sorry, will only take to mechanic if local, I note that you are in Ciutadella. Mechanic is welcome to come and see the car at our house near Alaior.

Hi Anita

It's not a 4 x 4 but it is slightly higher off the ground than a standard car. We have never had a problem but we dont take it on really rough tracks.

Thanks Steve, we'd like to come and see the car,  just waiting to hear when our friend has some free time this week, in general what are best times for you?
